EXREME WEATHER POLICY
The health and wellbeing of athletes, spectators and officials is a priority for Melton South Little Athletics Centre (MSLAC). MSLAC acknowledges that high intensity exercise on a hot day, with associated fluid loss, can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stress. This is a potentially fatal condition which requires urgent medical attention.
Strategies for reducing the risk of heat illness in children include the following:
Shade and drinks
Sun smart
Timing of activity
Intensity of activity – e.g. Avoiding endurance events
When considering whether it is safe to compete, or better to cancel events, there are many factors to consider, including temperature and humidity.
The ambient temperature is an easy to use guide to the risk of heat stress. If the temperature is above 36, the risk of illness is extreme. It is recommended the temperature be measured at 15 minute intervals at the same point on the track each time. If the temperature is over the cut off for 2 consecutive measurements it is advised that centres cancel all remaining events.
